What you can change about the GIF

Pick the framerate

The framerate decides how many frames of the video end up in each second of the GIF, up to 30 per second. Fewer frames means a smaller file and a choppier animation.

Loop forever, or count the loops

Left alone, the animation repeats without end. Set an iterations count between 1 and 256 and the GIF stops after that many plays.

Nothing to install

The conversion runs on our servers over an encrypted connection. There is no software to download and no account needed to use it.

Turn a video clip into an animated GIF

This MP4 to GIF converter supports MP4 files with different encodings. However, only the first 2 minutes of a longer clip will be converted into an animated GIF. If you want more GIFs, consider uploading several video clips at once.

A GIF is a run of still frames played in order, so the result animates on its own with no player and no play button. It also carries no audio: sound is not part of the format, so the soundtrack of the video is not in the GIF.

You can upload from your device, paste a link instead, or pull the clip in from cloud storage.

Only the frames are turned into the GIF. It loops automatically and has no sound.

The settings, and what each one changes

Framerate and iterations sit on the first tab. Framerate is frames per second, up to 30. Iterations is how many times the animation plays before it stops, and an empty field means it never stops.

The optional tab holds the size and the look: a width and a height in pixels, and a color filter offering grayscale, monochrome, negated colors, retro and sepia.

Five image processing switches finish the list: enhance, sharpen, antialias, despeckle and equalize. Every one of these is optional, and a GIF made with the defaults is a perfectly good GIF.

The settings panel sits beside the uploader.

Set the GIF framerate from 1 to 30 fps and the number of iterations. Leave iterations empty to loop forever. Framerate 1 30 Iterations

Set up to 30 frames per second. Leaving iterations empty makes the GIF loop forever.

Free to use, and private by default

Making a GIF from a video is free and needs no account. Every upload and download runs over an encrypted connection, so your footage cannot be read on the way.

Processing is fully automated: nobody watches your videos and they are never used to train AI models. You keep the copyright and the ownership of both the video you upload and the one you get back.

The servers that do the work are in Europe.

Questions about making GIFs from video

Does the GIF have sound?

No. A GIF stores frames of an image and nothing else, so there is no audio track to put the soundtrack in. If you want the sound on its own, convert the video to MP3 instead.

How long a clip can I turn into a GIF?

Only the first 2 minutes of a video become a GIF. A longer file still converts, but everything past the two minute mark is not in the result. Cut the video into pieces first and upload them together if you need the whole thing.

Can I convert several videos at once?

Yes. Add as many clips as you like and each one comes back as its own GIF, with the same settings applied to all of them.

Can I stop the GIF from looping forever?

Yes. The iterations setting takes a number from 1 to 256, and the animation stops after that many plays. Leave the field empty and it loops without end, which is what most GIFs do.

How do I get a smaller GIF?

Two settings do most of the work. A lower framerate stores fewer frames per second, and a smaller width and height store fewer pixels in each frame. Both are visible in the result, so change one at a time and look at what you get.

Does it cost anything?

No. Converting a video to a GIF here is free and does not require an account. A paid plan raises the upload limit and how many files you can process at once.
